The Course

With the Googlisation of information, everybody now is a searcher. So, where does that leave the information specialist? Nowadays, it’s no longer sufficient to sit back and wait for the mountain to come to Mohammed. For information professionals to survive, they must adapt from being repositories of knowledge about sources and search techniques and reach out to become part of the decision-making process for their organizations. Central to this is developing core analysis skills to provide information which helps drive decisions.

Competitive intelligence and the associated techniques of data mining, text mining and visualization are areas of critical importance to organizations; they are also areas where a little ignorance goes a long way. Decisions based on misunderstanding and misuse of the techniques and tools can be very costly. This is clearly an area where there is a huge opportunity for information specialists to take the lead and, as the Latin phrase of the title has it, to seize the day.

This seminar will provide an introduction to some of the issues surrounding data mining, text mining and visualization of information in pursuit of improved competitive intelligence. We will review some of the current tools and techniques available to extract hidden knowledge from existing information and explore some of the possibilities and perhaps more importantly, limitations of these tools and techniques.
