The Course

Web 2.0 represents a significant shift in the way people use the World Wide Web. In the early 1990s, the Web was revolutionary in democratizing access to information. This next step, Web 2.0, is equally revolutionary, allowing everyone to participate in developing the Web. Web development is no longer limited to people with markup and programming skills. Anyone who can type can start a blog and make his or her writings available to a world audience. Anyone can add knowledge to the collaborative online canvas that is a wiki. Anyone can make a movie and post it on sites like YouTube for others to comment on. Anyone can build an online community using a variety of social software tools.

This two-part seminar explores Web 2.0 and how it has been and can be implemented in libraries. Web 2.0 comprises both a philosophy and a toolset that can revolutionize how librarians serve their patrons. The philosophy is all about user-centered innovation, transparency, and increased community outreach. The toolset has laid at our feet an arsenal of free applications that allow us to provide innovative services to patrons online.

Part 1

Part 1 will discuss the principles of Web 2.0 and its implications for libraries. Participants will learn what Web 2.0 means and how the Web has changed so many people over the past few years. Participants will explore how librarians have adapted Web 2.0 principles to create Library 2.0, a service philosophy for libraries. We will also show some successful examples of libraries that have embraced the Library 2.0 philosophy in order to improve services for patrons.

Targeted Learners

This presentation is designed for librarians and information professionals who are interested in learning how to use new technologies to improve both online services to patrons and to internal communications. Most Web 2.0 tools are free and easy to use; therefore, these technologies are accessible to professionals in any type of setting and with any budget.

Critical Learning Questions

  • How is the Web different than it was ten years ago?
  • What is Web 2.0?
  • How can the philosophy of Web 2.0 be applied in libraries?
  • How have other libraries successfully applied Library 2.0 principles?
  • What can we learn from these library success stories?
